William L. Werner was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 20, 1894. He received a bachelor's degree from Muhlenberg College in 1915 and served in France with the 316th Infantry during World War I. Fred Lewis Pattee was an American author, poet, teacher, scholar, and a leading authority on American literature.
